DNA Building System is a residential home building research and design firm focused on reducing the cost of home building by 60% and home ownership by 80-90%. Established in 2020 by founder Clive Roux, an award winning industrial designer and John Nesbitt, the firm has been working on the development of a new building system for commercialization in the near future.
While seemingly an impossibly ambitious target, the group has made substantial progress towards this goal by thinking from first principles about how to change the way that homes are built, services are provided and homes are bought. The key to success in this endeavor lies in the understanding that home building is one of the last consumer products that are built more or less by hand on-site by tradesmen working on an individual build much like a prototype for a mass production product. Transforming home building to mass production techniques, to replace tradesmen’s on-site work is the key to successful cost reductions. Recognizing the scale, diversity of materials and customizations most home owners would like is another key aspect for a successful cost reduction.
The Master Plan
- Define a new way of building stand alone homes.
- Over the past 2 years we have defined a new building system called Dynamic New Architecture (DNA) for home building using a standardized system of panels and structural elements..
- Research and develop the new components for the DNA Building System.
- We are at present in the research phase to define the materials and production criteria of the new panel system.
- Build a proof of concept home.
- Build a proof of concept home to demonstrate the speed of production, building and cost savings potential and finally sell for improved margins to demonstrate the reason to use the system.
- Build a pilot production facility to demonstrate the cost and time saving potential of the DNA Building System.
- The production of standardized panels will bring huge cost savings as well as quality of build improvements. Work will start on the pilot factory in 2024.
- Ramp up the production of affordable home building in parallel with a ramp up of production of the DNA Building System components.
- Scale the production to mass production levels to realize the full cost benefits of the system and make the system available for other builders.
